QUARTZ HILL – Volunteers at Stephen Sorensen Park, Jackie Robinson Park, Pearblossom Park and George Lane Park were honored at a Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation banquet. Award recipients from Stephen Sorensen Park in Lake Los Angeles included Sister Agnus Numer and Gordon Skinner for assisting more than 500 families and working with the after-school program; Robin Nute for assisting at events and park planning; Olene Cleveland for donations of time and food; and Paul Bean for assisting with the after-school program and serving as the park’s designated Santa. Honored Jackie Robinson Park volunteers included Kirsten Colman for assisting teachers and for teaching dance; Deputy Johnie R. Oates III for tutoring and contributions of time, equipment and funds to the drill team, cheerleading and the youth basketball league; Mira Fitzpatrick and Irv Mitchell for organizing entertainment for the Juneteenth celebration; Lynda and Brian Hemenway for their efforts in the annual Patriotic Day program; and Jose Rodriguez for donations and assistance with the boxing program. Other Jackie Robinson Park volunteers who were honored were Christine Frances for time devoted to Friends of Jackie Robinson Park; Moses Primus for nine years as a Friend of Jackie Robinson Park; Demetrius Williams for assistance with the fitness boot camp, the health fair and other events; Vanessa Webb for teaching dance and involvement in special events; Wanda and Earl Thomas for their assistance in youth and adult athletics; Massond Ratch for donating his time and his land for parking during Juneteenth; Sabrina Hartman for organizing the youth softball league; and Karen Barrick-Alvarez for donating time and funds for the youth softball league. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
